How to Write a Personal Vision Statement a Guest Post by Ruthiey

Hey everyone, I’m Ruthiey and I blog at colormylifewithlove.blogspot.com.
I love to write about what God is teaching me and how I see him in my
life. That includes posts about my family and friends, and sometimes
fashion, poetry and photography. When Madeline asked if I wanted to
guest post, I was excited to do it. Thanks for letting me,
Madeline!

I want to tell you about a recent experience I had. It was actually
part of a school assignment which shows that God really does meet you
everywhere. In a Leadership class I’m taking, I was assigned to
write a personal vision statement. It was a harder than I thought, but
it gave me some much needed clarity. Before this, I had been
discontent and impatient with many areas of my life, including my
family and work.

A vision statement is essentially narrowing down what your values are.
As my textbook*
says, “Values guide and direct behavior.” I wanted to write about it,
so you could do it too!

First, it’s important to first define your roles. Some of the roles in
my life are sister, friend, daughter, nursing assistant, writer and
student. That gives a me framework within which to fit my vision
statement.

Second, figure out your values. There are different ways to go about
that. I have a really great resource of how I came up with mine, if
anyone is interested. Essentially, I found out that my top terminal
values are salvation, wisdom, true friendship, family
security, a sense of accomplishment and a world of beauty.
My top instrumental values were to
be courageous, obedient, loving, imaginative, responsible
and honest.

My vision statement: To love and encourage others
with my courageous faith, creation of beauty and celebration of
truth.

I looked at my life and realized that I actually was where I wanted to
be in so many ways. I had opportunities to follow every aspect of my
vision statement.

  • I can practice courageous faith by taking God at His word and
acting on what he calls me to do.
  • I can create beauty by adding special details to decorate a room,
make a beautiful meal at work for my residents or cookies for my
family. I can create beauty by pursuing my dream of finishing my novel
    and taking beautiful pictures.
  • I can celebrate truth being willing to speak it even when the
circumstances are hard and I’m struggling against fear and
discouragement. I can celebrate truth by always having an answer for
the hope that lies within me*.

To fulfill the first part of my vision of reach others, I
shortened my statement to a slogan.

Courage for others – In reaching for those three goals, I can
be a living testimony. By being courageous and faithful, I can speak
words of love and encouragement to those around me.

Because my personal vision statement contains what I value most, it’s
not just another list of goals. It’s something my heart aches and
longs to do. It also teaches me gratitude and what I can do to
make the most of where I am.

Thank you for reading my post. I hope it blessed you.
