homeschooler fashion 101

Just to preface this you may have a different sense of style then me or higher modesty standards in no way am I trying to get you to lower your standards! In this post  are my observations and personal preferences. If you dress in a style that might not be my favorite don’t take this post as a judgement toward you.

{Thanks Care for your great facial expressions}

I started this post while people watching at a homeschool conference. Conferences are great places in my opinion to get ideas as to fashion do’s and don’ts. Its interesting to see peoples views of modesty portrayed. Some dress beautifully, fashionably, and modestly and some stick more to practicality and modesty. Whatever way you dress I hope that this will make you laugh as it did for me as I spent time writing. :)

Don’t wear tennis shoes with skirts! Instead opt for TOMs, flip-flops, sandals, flats or cute boots.

Avoid wearing  flare with flare unless. (flowe-y shirt with flowey skirt) This can work if the top is cropped and a fitted tank is worn under it.

When wearing a long denim skirt skip the turtle necks and long sleeved crew neck solids that are on the baggy fit side.

When you wear long skirts there should be a bit of a flare and being fitted at the hips is nice too.

socks with sandals are for grandpa’s not teens.

when layering make sure that the shirt underneath the other shirt is of a fabric and color that matches nicely. stay away from ribbed knits. also if the expanse is too wide your going to start to look frumpy. Try a necklace to give interest. I’m all for layering in a tasteful manner!

if your wearing flats and you want to wear socks make sure that they come above your hemline so that you can’t see  the top of the sock. Specifically white ankle socks don’t work with flats.

if your going to wear a tunic wear it with skinny//fitted capris, jeans or leggings, baggy+baggy doesn’t work!

crocs are only ok for little kids and even then its a little questionable.

If you have your ears pierced always wear earrings that match your outfit. I like simple shaped dangles with nice texture.

if your wearing a button down, don’t button it all the way to the top, if you have a coordinating tank on it can be really flattering to have it show the same thing applies for polo shirts.

tee shirts(as in the unisex shirts that you get from events/schools etc.) and skirts don’t really go together. My main exception to this is when your working at a conference and want to wear a skirt and need to wear the tee shirt.

jean jumpers that resemble bags don’t look good on anyone, try a cute skirt and top instead.

Acessorize! scarfs, necklaces, headbands, hair flowers, hats, etc. take plain outfits up a notch!

  2. Bethany says:

Huh…I used to wear tennis shoes and skirts all the time…now I wear sandals instead :)

And yes, I do own a jean jumper…though I think of it as “resembling a bag” so I rarely ever wear it :)

Fun post, Madeline =D I haven’t forgotten about your letter…one of these days you’ll get it, don’t worry. :-)

Hi Aaliyah, though I have not worn a jumper before, I have seen really cute ones, worn “fashionably” too! Don’t be disheartened by an opinion! :)

No comment on the actual points, but it is interesting to see how some of these points counteract with trends here in Canada (socks and sandals is all the rage with teens right now!)

Lol!! I had a good laugh! Some of these are SO true! Jean jumpers, Tennis Shoes with skirts! It’s kind of funny how there is a steriotype homeschooler and that many are willing to fit into the mold!

one of my pet peeves, is when people dress in (to me) nice clothes and long earings for dirty yard work. (maybe it’s just me)

  6. Kristiana says:

lol!! This is indeed a fashion 101 guidline :) But I have to say jean jumpers are really cute when accessorized and well fit :) I think our sense of style is the same because I could totally relate to all of the observing and guidlines you talked about! :)

“jean jumpers that resemble bags don’t look good on anyone, try a cute skirt and top instead” Lol yeah! I dunno that I’ve ever seen someone wearing one in real life thought. I’m Australian lol.
